Biography

Mira Calix is an award winning composer, producer and performer based in the United Kingdom. She is signed to Warp Records, on which she has released five albums.  Although her earlier music is almost exclusively electronic and organic in nature,  in recent years she has incorporated  classical orchestration into her work for dance, film, theatre, opera and installations.

Mira has been commissioned to write new works for many established music and art institutions; the London Sinfonietta, Bang On A Can, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Aldeburgh Festival, Opera North, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic-Ensemble/10/10  and The Manchester International Festival, to name but a few. She has won a British Composer Award, a Royal Philharmonic Society Award, a Grant For The Arts by the The Arts Council Of England, Escalator Fund, and an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica. Mira has performed at international concert halls and festivals including All Tomorrow’s Parties, Latitude, Glastonbury, Sonar, Performa, Barbican, Centre Pompidou, Marinski, Concergebouw, Parco Della Musica, Konzerthaus Berlin, Sage Gateshead, and Snape. She has released music alongside avant-garde classical composers like Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Jonathan Harvey and collaborated with indie innovators such as Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap) and Brian Mc Comber (Dirty Projectors). She even supported Radiohead on a leg of their Kid A tour!

Mira’s installation ’My Secret Heart’ has been experienced by an audience of over 100,000 in cities across the globe, including Beijing, Paris, New York and Yokahama. She has collaborated with United Visual Artists on ‘Chorus’, a groundbreaking 16 speaker pedulum installation and with Flat-E on ‘Fables – A Film Opera’. Nothing Is Set In Stone, Mira’s reactive musical sculpture opened at Fairlop Waters, London on June 21, commissioned as part of Secrets presented by the Mayor of London and the London 2012 FestivalMira is currently working on a new score for Alfred Hitchock’s Champagne, commissioned by the British Film Institute as part of their Hitchock Season. The new work will premier in September 2012.
