Composer, pianist and a self-taught studio wizard Jon Hopkins makes big, bold music using walls of synths, twinkling melodies and amorphous bass rumbles. His skills are impeccable – from Herbie Hancock to David Holmes, contemporary choreographer Wayne McGregor (Random Dance), lo-fi folkster King Creosote, not to mention his buddies Coldplay who he supported on their 2010 UK/US tour, have all called upon the 28-year-old Londoner’s handiwork as a producer and composer. He has also collaborated with Brian Eno for Eno’s Warp Records debut, Small Craft On A Milk Sea, released in November 2010. His remixes include tracks by Wild Beasts, Nosaj Thing, Imogen Heap and Four Tet, the latter returning the favour on Hopkins’ ‘Vessel’, which was backed by a Nathan Fake remix of Wire.
Hopkins and King Creosote’s Mercury Prize nominated Diamond Mine was released through Domino on the 28th March 2011; a ‘soundtrack to a romanticised version of a life lived in a scottish coastal village’, the record weaves in slices of Fife life, bike wheels, spring tides, tea cups and café chatter to produce a beautiful, unique and timeless album. It was followed by their Honest Words EP.
